This study focused on exploring options for small wineries to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and assess their operational circularity. A case study approach was employed, examining a small winegrower in New Zealand to identify key environmental impact areas throughout the stages of wine production and provide recommendations for improvement.The study utilised the International Wineries for Climate Action Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculation, a life-cycle analysis tool, and circular economy theory to evaluate the winery's processes in a holistic and comprehensive manner. The exploratory component of the study highlighted the challenges associated with implementing life cycle analyses in small businesses. Despite these limitations, the findings emphasised the significance of viticulture and packaging activities in the distribution of greenhouse gas emissions, and identified the most effective sustainability measures for reducing emissions. The study identified practical implications, including the importance of winegrowers understanding their environmental impact, the need for user-friendly monitoring tools, and enhanced sustainability practices in small/organic wineries. It also highlighted the governance gap in certification programs regarding packaging and distribution.Based on the findings and implications of the study, recommendations for increasing sustainability in the New Zealand wine industry were discussed. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights to the understanding of sustainable practices in the wine industry and provides actionable recommendations for small wineries seeking to enhance their sustainability efforts.
