Prof. Marc Dreßler receives OIV award

Prof. Dr. Marc Dreßler receives award from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV)

Marc Dreßler, Professor of Business Administration at the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society, has received an award from the OIV (L'Organization Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin) for his recently published textbook "Nachhaltiges Unternehmertum - Strategisches Management am Beispiel der Weinbranche". The award ceremony took place as part of the OIV Awards on September 30 in Bordeaux.

Marc Dreßler's heart beats for strategy, entrepreneurship and sustainability. He teaches at the Wine Campus Neustadt and is head of the MBA Wine, Sustainability & Sales program. Together with his research team, he has established a panel on strategy and innovation in the wine industry since 2012. At the end of 2021, he published his book "Nachhaltiges Unternehmertum - Strategisches Management am Beispiel der Weinbranche", published by utb-Verlag. The book provides practical management skills for strategic management and establishing sustainability. "It has long been a concern of mine to provide students, small and medium-sized enterprises and, above all, winegrowers with a standard work that offers concrete practical examples and recommendations for action, but also conveys empirically sound knowledge," says Dreßler, explaining his motivation for writing the reference book. His work was awarded a "Special Mention" in the "Vitivinicultural Economy" category by the OIV - the International Organization of Vine and Wine. The award ceremony took place on September 30, 2022 in the city of wine, Bordeaux. Marc Dreßler is delighted with this award: "It is an honour to be recognized by the top-class jury of an international organization. Both the Wine Campus Neustadt and Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences can benefit from this as research and teaching locations."

The OIV was founded in 1874, originally as an organization looking for solutions in the fight against phylloxera - phylloxera. Today, the OIV comprises 48 member states. The OIV Awards were presented for the first time in 1930. A jury of international experts from all member states evaluated around 60 nominated publications from 20 countries. 15 publications received an OIV Award and 9 received a special mention from the jury. The OIV Awards promote the dissemination of current knowledge about vines and wine in the scientific and technical world as well as among the general public.

After the award ceremony in Bordeaux is before the next book publication: Professor Dreßler and his team are back in the thick of things and are currently working on the translation of the book into English: "The English version is scheduled for publication in early 2023," Dressler announces. "We hope to provide wine companies around the world with trend-setting guidance on sustainability and entrepreneurship."

Comments on the book

"Marc Dreßler's book provides a very precise and detailed insight into business management for every farm manager and business leader in viticulture. It sensitizes the reader to those elements that are indispensable for successfully steering a business into the future. The potential and usefulness of its approaches are underpinned with many practical examples. A must-read for anyone looking for support and a guide to developing further in this rapidly changing world."

Jochen Dreissigacker, Dreissigacker Winery, organic winery in Rheinhessen

"For the wine industry, this book provides an up-to-date and realistic insight into the actual business world. Based on surveys of many wineries, it outlines the current situation. Together with the principles of corporate management and strategic approaches, the creation of sustainable business models is demonstrated. The approach can be transferred to other sectors. The large number of different examples has made it clear to me how diverse the aspects of sustainability are. I had previously underestimated the complexity of this topic."

Dr. Uli Schell, Professor of Applied Logistics and Polymer Sciences, Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences

"It is more than welcome that Marc Dreßler has presented a reference book in the form of "Sustainable Entrepreneurship", which cannot be ignored in the wine industry, but which everyone, from trainees to successful winery managers or company bosses, should not only put under their pillow, but study carefully. It clearly has the potential to make a significant contribution to raising awareness and changing attitudes in the industry. For years, sustainable viticulture has always been in danger of being simplified in the industry, as a synonym for organic viticulture or for what makes winegrowers tick anyway, because their vines have been standing for so long and so on and so forth."

Dr. Rudolf Nickenig, former Secretary General of the German Winegrowers' Association
