Projects from theory to practice

NEO wine project

Just in time for its 10th anniversary, the Wine Campus Neustadt designed its own wine line in 2019. The students were actively involved in the design process. The basis for the product development  and product design was a workshop held in April 2019 as part of the marketing lecture with Wine Campus Neustadt students. The workshop was designed so that the participants first received an overview of printing techniques, color theory, packaging materials and the product planning process and then tasted the wines. With this background knowledge, the students got creative in a second step and used mood boards to develop ideas for the wine packaging. These ideas were collected and served as the basis for an agency briefing.

Project in cooperation with Wirtschaftsentwicklungsgesellschaft Neustadt an der Weinstraße mbH

As can be observed in many cities, the city of Neustadt is also struggling with vacancies in the city center. Neustadt an der Weinstraße is located in the heart of the Palatinate wine-growing region, which means that the topic of wine is omnipresent. The idea of recruiting students from the Wine Campus Neustadt to develop a utilization concept that picks up on the city's regional characteristics was therefore an obvious one. The idea was to bring wine to life in vacant spaces in Neustadt's city center. An area in Klemmhof and the little house on Juliusplatz (Hetzelstraße 28) were selected.

After a city tour and inspection of the properties, the students each chose one of the vacant spaces for their working group. The development of the utilization concepts required more than just creativity. The concepts had to be innovative and at the same time feasible, taking into account financial, legal and social conditions.

The best results were awarded prizes by a jury consisting of representatives from the city of Neustadt.

Project work in cooperation with the municipality of Maikammer

Hardly any other municipality in the Palatinate has such a high density of wineries as Maikammer. The importance of wine tourism and the associated significance of the three wine-related festivals that take place in Maikammer throughout the year is therefore correspondingly important for the town. Maikammer has been a member of the Cittaslow association since 2017. This means that the primary goal of all decisions is to further improve the quality of life for the citizens and the quality of stay for guests.

In the course of the Wine and Tourism lecture, the students worked on two projects with different objectives for the cooperation partner. One project focused on increasing the attractiveness of the Maikammer May Festival, particularly by integrating the guiding principle of Cittaslow. The second project dealt with the question of how the municipality can use the Cittaslow label for its own promotional purposes and how the public's perception of it can be increased in terms of active participation.

Particularly in light of the importance and  the challenges of wine tourism for destination development, it is important for students,

to learn about and apply instruments for shaping cooperation between winegrowers, tourism businesses and municipalities.

In order to obtain as comprehensive a picture of the situation as possible for the project work, the entire wine tourism infrastructure of the location was examined. The students also conducted an opinion survey by interviewing visitors during the Maikammer May Festival and then analyzing the responses. The results were then presented to representatives of Maikammer and their feasibility and usefulness were discussed.
