The Life of Friedrich Gennheimer
Friedrich Wilhelm Gennheimer was born in 1930 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße as part of the Gennheimer Brothers Sparkling Wine Cellar. His professional career began with a degree in business administration. In 1970, he was appointed to teach General Business Administration at the vocational schools in Speyer. This teaching position was accompanied by his appointment as a tenured civil servant. In 1971, he was transferred to the State Higher School of Economics in Ludwigshafen. There, Gennheimer accepted a teaching position, also in business administration. Just one year later, he was appointed “Professor at the University of Applied Sciences” and transferred to the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences’ Ludwigshafen campus. Gennheimer taught in the fields of marketing, human resources, and vocational training. From 1979 to 1987, he also served as dean of the Ludwigshafen campus and was responsible during this period for the founding of the Worms campus (now an independent university) as well as the later East Asian Institute in Ludwigshafen. In February 1996, Gennheimer retired, though he continued to teach the subject of “Communication and Contracting Policy” as a lecturer at the East Asian Institute within the Department of Business Administration II for the following two years.
Friedrich Gennheimer passed away in 2022, leaving a will that is now administered by Prof. Dr. Siegfried Englert. Englert is one of the co-founders of the Wine Campus Neustadt and a former professor at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society. In memory of Gennheimer, the Friedrich Gennheimer Prize was established in the spring of 2023 in collaboration with the Haniel Foundation as the awarding institution.

Making a Difference Through Values
The Prize Sponsor
The Haniel Foundation was established in 1988 as a nonprofit foundation under private law by Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH. In keeping with the philosophy of the Haniel family and the Haniel company, the Haniel Foundation pursues its goals and its mission, “Making a Difference Through Values,” through two main areas of focus:
- Sustainable Entrepreneurship: The Haniel Foundation supports young entrepreneurial talent. Future leaders in our society and economy. Talented individuals who drive change—with ideas, with integrity, and with a cross-generational understanding of the values of the honorable businessman. We provide these talents with top scholarships, access to our community, and a broad spectrum of excellent opportunities.
- Education as an Opportunity: Children and young people in challenging environments deserve fair opportunities. Education opens doors. We launch support initiatives and effective programs, joining forces with partners to help young people graduate from school and enter the workforce. We do this out of a sense of responsibility for our home region, the Ruhr area.
In close cooperation with the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society
The Ludwigshafen University of Business and Society has maintained a stable partnership with the East Asia Institute and the Haniel Foundation for more than 25 years. Through the annual presentation of the Haniel Prize at the East Asia Institute, the Haniel Foundation has supported study abroad programs for German students in China and Japan. In addition, through two consecutive scholarship programs, the Haniel Foundation supported over 70 Chinese scholarship recipients who were pursuing careers in management at internationally active companies and were studying at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences and the East Asian Institute.
Not least because of this long-standing, trusting partnership, Professor Gennheimer felt compelled to establish the newly created Friedrich Gennheimer Prize—in collaboration with the Haniel Foundation—at his former place of work.
