Neustadt is one of the strongest research locations in the food industry research group
The Neustadt research hub, home to the Rural Area Service Center (DLR) Rhenish Palatinate in partnership with the universities in Ludwigshafen, Kaiserslautern, and Bingen at the Wine Campus Neustadt, is one of the seven most research-active sites in the food industry research network, with 10 ongoing research projects. This places Neustadt on par with renowned universities such as the Technical University of Munich, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and the universities in Hohenheim, Erlangen, Hamburg, and Berlin in terms of research activities. Of particular interest were the projects on energy and resource conservation led by Prof. Dr. Durner in collaboration with the University of Erlangen, as well as the rapid test for harmful organisms in must and wine supervised by Prof. Dr. Maren Scharfenberger-Schmeer.
The projects are funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) through the Alliance for Industrial Collaborative Research (AiF) to support smaller companies that cannot afford their own research and development by facilitating pre-competitive projects with universities and other research institutions. The project proposals are evaluated by six reviewers, and their suggestions for improvement enhance both the quality of the research and the final chances of approval by the BMWi. The reviewers are drawn from the Scientific Advisory Board, whose 100 members are composed of an equal number of scientists and industry representatives. At the same time, the Scientific Advisory Board discusses the project proposals and votes on their approval.
